About the Artist

Sybil Hill Carter is a contemporary American landscape painter based in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Working primarily in oil, she creates intimate landscapes inspired by the changing light, quiet beauty, and natural rhythms of the places she knows and loves. Her paintings reflect a deep connection to the outdoors and an enduring fascination with atmosphere, color, and the emotional presence of the land.

Sybil has painted throughout much of her life, creating and selling hundreds of original works that are now held in private collections across the United States. Her earlier explorations in color, abstraction, and mixed media became an important part of her artistic education, gradually leading her toward the clarity and permanence of oil painting.

Her current practice is centered on painting landscapes both outdoors and in the studio. Using professional, archival oil-painting materials, she is developing a focused body of work rooted in observation and personal experience. The rivers, gardens, mountain valleys, and open landscapes of Colorado provide an endless source of inspiration.

Sybil’s relationship with art began early. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, she visited museums and galleries throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area with her family. Her father was a self-taught abstract painter whose work was exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art, and observing his independent creative process helped shape her belief in the importance of finding one’s own artistic language.

As a young woman, Sybil worked as an international fashion model alongside her twin sister, traveling throughout Europe and living in Puerto Rico for a time. While there, she studied art at the Art League of Puerto Rico in Old San Juan. Her experiences with art, fashion, travel, and different cultures continued to expand her visual awareness and appreciation for color and design.

In 2020, Sybil and her sister opened a gallery beside the river in Colorado, where Sybil exhibited her paintings and further developed her life as a working artist. Following the sale of the gallery in 2025, she chose to simplify her creative practice and devote herself more fully to painting.

Sybil is continuing her plein-air studies in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where the meeting of land, ocean, atmosphere, and shifting coastal light offers a natural extension of her Colorado landscape work.

This new collection represents both a return and a beginning: a life in art distilled into paintings of the natural world.
